Honeysuckle Sips

with work by Melissa Dadourian, Keiko Narahashi, and Sarah Heinemann

curated by Tracy McKenna

September 9 - October 28, 2023

reception Saturday September 9, 5 - 7 PM

It’s that back-to-school, back-to-the-art season feeling: the excitement of a fresh start while still wrapped in summer’s warm embrace. So here we are, once again, mining the broad field of abstraction, celebrating new voices. Three artists, three materials, a consideration of scale and color in a specific viewing space. Here are Melissa Dadourian's boob portraits, clear as day with titles to lead the eye, made with fiber stretched beyond its implied domesticity. There are Keiko Narahashi’s painter-trained ceramic sculptures: grouped pieces of pure abstract shape, while others stand on their own as land- and skyscapes beckoning the viewer closer. The lush and moody intensity of color in Sarah Heinemann’s paintings pushes against the familiar comfort of grids. All three artists approach their practices with a push-pull, “if this, then what” attitude mirroring the inherent tension of the title’s namesake sweet, but invasive, vine. Honeysuckle Sips is a celebration, a launch into new territory, an expansion of thought.
