In this suite of new paintings and drawings, Sarah Brenneman uses her beautifully-honed and highly specific language to tell the story of a profound and recent loss. 

Sarah Brenneman (b.1975, Middletown, OH) lives and works in West Orange, NJ. She received her BFA in painting from Columbus College of Art in 1998 and her MFA in painting from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. She has had three solo shows in New York with Jeff Bailey Gallery in 2004, 2006 and 2011. She has shown work at Anna Nova Gallery in St. Petersburg, Russia, Triumph Gallery in Moscow, Russia, Shelter Rock Art Gallery in Manhasset, NY, The Gatewood Gallery at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and at Daniel Weinberg Gallery in Los Angeles, CA among others. In 2000 she was awarded a full fellowship to attend the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. In 2003 she was awarded a residency at Millay Colony of the Arts. Brenneman has work included in several private and corporate collections including Aspen Contemporary Art Collection, Citigroup, Cleveland Clinic, Sprint and The Progressive Corporation.

“Although the work in this show is quite personal in meaning to me, the themes are universal. Love, loss, yearning, growth, protection, death and memory are among the powerful threads in these paintings and drawing. Many of the drawings were carried back and forth for months while I spent time with my Mother who was being treated for cancer in Ohio. The drawings were made in hotel rooms, at her bedside, on airplanes and in hospital waiting areas and in my studio back in New Jersey in the garage of my home with my young boys running in and out. The making of these drawings and paintings were my tool in making some kind of sense of what was happening. The strength, the fading and ultimately the loss of my closest friend and confidant.
